To encourage the media personnel to handle
the issue of CSA in a more meaningful way, Sahil started to appreciate the
contribution of newspapers because sensitive reporting of these issues helps
to create a profound impact on society.
For this
purpose, Child Friendly Newspaper Award (CFN) was introduced by Sahil in the
year 2005 to appreciate the contributions and efforts of the newspapers in
reporting cases of Child Sexual Abuse in Pakistan. The purpose of this award
is to select the Child Friendly Newspaper for each year.
The
criteria developed for the Child Friendly Newspaper Award is based on
the following:
1. Frequency of newspaper in highlighting
issues related to children.
2. Special
pages or editions in the newspaper dedicated to children.
3. The number
of CSA cases reported.
4. Name and
picture of the victim should not be reported in the news related to child sexual abuse.
5.
Names and
occupation of the victim’s parents should not be reported.
6. Permission
should be taken from the victim’s family for publishing any picture related
to the incident.
7. Information
of abuser could be highlighted in the reporting.
8. The reporter
should cross check the First Information Report (FIR) as a follow up for
verification.
9.
Frequency of
Newspaper in highlighting the issue of Child Rights Convention (CRC).
10. Follow
up of CSA court cases, especially convictions.
11. Language
ethics while reporting CSA.
12. Newspapers
reporting should include crime category, abuser category, and
age of victim/abuser, geographical area, and place of abuse and case
status
(FIR registration).
Award
Categories
The award
is given in three categories according to the circulation of the newspaper:
1.
Child
Friendly Newspaper: circulation over 50,000
2.
Child
Friendly Newspaper: circulation over 20,000
3.
Child
Friendly Newspaper: circulation over 10,000
Award for CFN 2006
Sahil conducted its second ceremony of
Child Friendly Newspaper Award 2006 and Best Volunteer Award 2006 on 27
February 2007, in Crystal Ball Room of Marriot Hotel Islamabad.
Chief Guest of the ceremony was Mr.Tariq
Azeem, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting, while Mr. M.Z. Sohail,
Director International Relations, PTV Islamabad was Guest of Honor.

Mr. Tariq Azeem, State Minister presented
Award Shield to the first winner in National Category and a prize cheque of
20,000/- Rupees to the Resident Editor Daily Khabrain, Abdul Wadood Qureshi.
He also presented Award Shield and a cheque of 15,000/- rupees to second
winner in Regional category Daily Asas.
While Guest of Honour, Mr. M.Z Sohail,
presented an
award shield to Mr.Imdaad Phulpoto, the Editor of a Sindhi local newspaper
Tameer-e-Sindh and also presented award shield to Mr.Shaukat Saleem Khan,
an Advocate representing
Peshawar High Court,
was selected as the "Best Volunteer" for 2006 due to his
valuable contributions as a
Sahil volunteer in providing free Legal Aid for 13 CSA cases in Swat
District.
Chairperson Sahil, Mr. Khawar S Ansari, gave the certificate of special
appreciation to Volunteer Mr.Iftikhar Mubarik for his on going activities to
promote Sahil’s vision.
A
total of 108 participants, 88 from media, Ministries and organizations
participated in the ceremony including Sahil Staff.
