PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING
The aim of
Counseling is to provide an opportunity to every individual to work towards
living in a more satisfying and resourceful way. The right of the client to make
his or her own decisions is respected and mostly the clients are encouraged to
make their own decisions maintaining full confidentiality on the part of the
counselor.
For those who opt
for getting counseled the first thing clarified is ‘confidentiality’ so that
they do not feel insecure in sharing experiences. It is made clear that what
they say might be discussed with the supervisor without taking names, and that
too would be focused more on counselor needs rather than the client. And if it
is required to talk to someone whom the client knows then it would only be done
with the permission of the client.
Counseling
cannot begin until people recognize their need to change and until they are at
least some way towards committing themselves to change. The decision to begin
Counseling is often not an easy one, and can be overwhelming at times. We have
the utmost respect for the choice that you have made to deal with problems and
issues that are impacting your life, and wish you the best possible Counseling
experience.
We are very glad that you
are ready to help yourself.

Play
Therapy:
To grow up to be healthy, very young children do not need to know
how to read, but they need to know how to play. (Fred Rogers)
Play is the
singular central activity of childhood, occur ring
at all times and all places. Children are not taught how to play nor do they
need directions to play. Play is spontaneous, enjoyable, and voluntary and
non-goal directed.
Play is the
child’s natural medium of communication, for optimal growth and development.
Play involves the
child’s physical, mental and emotional self in creative expression and involves
social interaction. Thus when the child plays one can say that the total child
is present.
Play therapy is
“a dynamic interpersonal relationship between a child or adolescent and a
therapist trained in play therapy.
A wide variety of
play materials are provided to the client to allow for free expression and to
explore their feelings, thoughts, emotions and behaviors through play.
At JHC, a play
therapy room has been established where clients can go and use the toys. Play
therapy has been demonstrated to be affective with children of all diagnostic
categories except the completely autistic and out of contact schizophrenics. It
is very effective to improve the emotional adjustment of sexually abused and
neglected children, and child witnesses of domestic violence.
